More or less a greatest hits selection of Channel One riddims. Many of them reworks of classic Studio One tracks. Every tune on these two albums is a peach. From the Revolutionaries set ‘Earthquake’, ‘Leftist’, ‘PLA’, ‘Angola’ are all favourites at Revival Pressure, but ‘MPLA’ is the one. Bound to shake up any dance. The Channel One cut of the Roy Richards classic ‘Freedom Blues’ is a show stopper when ever played. Vital dub is a collection of riddims used on the Mighty Diamonds ‘Right time’ lp. Well played, lovely sound as you would expect.
JOE GIBBS & THE PROFFESIONALS - STATE OF EMERGENCY. Joe Gibbs’ dub collections are soon to be featured, but this set is proper instrumentals as apposed to dub workouts. Thick, heavy horns over some Gibbs classics care of Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon and Marquis. A lovely little release. If you haven’t got it, get it.
TOMMY Mc COOK (BUNNY LEE) - PRESENTS THE AGGROVATERS. Often I think, the late, great Tommy McCook’s later work is overlooked in favour of the excellent foundation ska, rock steady and early reggae work. This is a collection of the great man doing his stuff over some tuff Bunny Lee ridims. Stand out track is the version of Johnny Clarke’s ‘Move out of Babylon, rastaman’ called ’Movin out’ which gets a regular airing by the Revival Pressure selectors.
BURNING SPEAR (JACK RUBY) - GARVEYS GHOST. It is no surprise that one of the greatest vocal long players has an equally awesome dub set care of Jack Ruby. Quite suttle compared to some dub releases, this album uses snatches of Winston Rodney’s vocal to create quite a haunting sound. An essential companian to the vocal lp.
ROOTS RADICS (JUNJO LEWIS) - LIVE AT CHANNEL ONE. Lovely little collection of very late 70’s/early 80’s Roots Radics workouts all with the new sound that signalled a slight shift from the steppers rockers sounds to a slower tempo, hypnotic sound of that time. A couple of versions of Tristan Palmers’s ‘Entertainment’ always go down well.
PRINCE JAMMYS - IN LIONS DUB STYLE. In the period, just before the Prince became the King, Jammys released some heavy, heavy roots music all blessed with top notch sound and production (not suprising really!) These are his mixes of tracks mostly by Black Uhuru with Jammys trademark sound.

KING TUBBYS MEETS ROCKERS UPTOWN (AUGUSTUS PABLO). What a release. I am still as shaken by this album as I was when I first heard it! Pablo’s classic riddims given a damn good Tubbys shake-up and shake-down. Version to ‘Baby I love you so’ which gives this collection its title, ‘Say so’, ‘555 Crown Street’ all classic Pablo produced tunes are presented here in a dub masterpiece. Be afraid!
TOMMY Mc COOK (YABBY YOU) - BLAZING HORNS - Another Tommy McCook masterpiece here as Mr McCook does his thing over some classic Yabby You (Vivian Jackson) productions. Like the Aggrovators set, the combination of Mr McCooks soft horns over some hard late 70’s riddims works a treat. My personal favourite is the ‘Ites of Zion’ track.
TOMMY McCOOK - DOWN ON BOND STREET. This is an essential selection of Tommy McCooks work at Treasure Isle. Wonderful instrumental rock steady and early reggae with a topping of ska. Probably the most important musicians in the development of reggae music from 60’s through the 70’s. Sit back and enjoy.
COXSONE DODD (STUDIO ONE) -DUB STORE SPECIAL / BETTER DUB.
Two brilliant collections of Studio One riddims given a good dub going over by Sir Coxsone Dodd. Better Dub has riddims like ’My guiding star’, ’You don’t love me’, ’College Rock’ and ’Mean Girl’ whilst Dub Store Special has ‘Hanging on the wall’, ‘Darker shade of Black’, ‘Queen Majesty’ and ‘Skylarking’. Don’t decide between the two of them, buy them both
JOE GIBBS - AFRICAN DUB 1-4. The combination of Joe Gibbs and Errol T was indeed a potent one. Many top notch versions graced the records released on the various Joe Gibbs owned labels. Spreading over 4 chapters, this is un-missable forward thinking dub. The Mighty Two indeed!
CLIVE CHIN - JAVA JAVA JAVA JAVA. Very underated dub set this. Clive Chin and Errol Thompson with a young Augustus Pablo make this a very enjoyable collection of dubs. Versions to tunes like ‘My guiding star’, and the cut of ‘Swing easy’ are stand out tracks.GLADESTONE ANDERSON - GLADY UNLIMITED. Gladestone Anderson has played piano on some of the best records ever to come out of Jamaica, so it only seems right that he should have a fantastic set with him pushed upfront. All on wicked Harry Mudie riddims, this is proper piano playing with lovely sounding strings and horns. A real jazzy, but still with a distinctly reggae feel.
KING TUBBY MEETS ROOTS RADICS - DANGEROUS DUB (JAH SCREW)- Awesome dub album from Tubbys with production care of Jah Screw and Ranking Joe who worked together on the Ray Symbolic sound system at the end of the 70’s. As you would expect, fat, well played riddims from the Roots Radics. ‘Heavenless’ and ‘Shank I sheck’ both get a visit here and is a lovely demonstration of how dub kept running even when the music slowed a little.
CEDRIC BROOKS - IM FLASH FORWARD. Another great, great player from Brentford Road. This is a fine collection of his horns work. Containing versions of ‘Skylarking’ and ‘Picture on the wall’ you now what to expect. Utter Studio One madness. How many great musicians came out of that studio?!
SCIENTIST - THE SEDUCER DUBWISE. A very good collection of dubs mixed by King Tubby’s apprentice. Early 80’s riddims including Frankie Paul’s ‘Worries in the dance’ and a lovely early dancehall cut of the classic Studio One ‘Darker shade of Black’ are the highlights with Scientist in laid back, but still upfront style.
KING TUBBYS - RASTA DUB 76. This is classic, unbeatable Tubbys. Hard Bunny Lee riddims, many of which were used for classic Johnny Clarke sides, with the Dub Master working his magic over the top. Tracks like ‘Hold On’, ‘None shall escape’ and ‘Ites, gold and Green’ are all given the trademark dub treatment. More flying cymbals and echo then you can shake a stick at! Classic Tubbys.
PABLOVE BLACK - MR MUSIC. Nice collection of yet another awesome player from Studio One. Using keyboards and melodica, Pablove Black plays over some classic riddims. Stand out tracks are ‘Hurting’ and ‘Dread head’ (a melodica cut of Burning Spears ‘Swell headed).Only problem is, there is no ‘Black wax’, ‘Consumer Sounds’, ‘High locks’ or ‘Push pull’ which are Pablove Blacks best sides for Studio One. A worthwhile listen never the less.
