1) THE ETHIOPIANS - NO BAPTISM (BLANK)Classic Derrick Harriot produced side on a blank label but with a lovely ’Derrick Harriots One stop shop. Juke box only’ stamp. Unbeatable tune.
2) CARLTON PATTERSON - DREAD LOCKS POWER (BLACK & WHITE 7)
Yet another corker of a tune from Carlton Patterson and his Black and White label. Graced with a top notch tubbys dub
3) RODIGAN with I ROY & PAPA FACE (1982 LIVE SESSION CD) Another great ‘in session’ cd from Massive International store, Camden. Ram Jam plays a wicked selection of riddims with a lot of Studio One, Papa Face and I Roy give a master class in deejay business.
4) RANKING TREVOR - IN FINE STYLE (VIRGIN FRONTLINE LP) Been after this long player for a while, but it somehow elluded me till recently. Top draw late 70’s deejay tunes using a hand full of classic Channel One riddims. Classic stuff.
5) THE PROFFESSIONALS - BLACK SEPTEMBER (JOE GIBBS 7) This is the instumental cut to Joe Gibbs updated version of the Heptones ‘Equal rights’ tune which Dennis Brown and Big Youth re-cut. As you would expect, driving horns and a lovely sound.
6) JAH WALTON - STAY A YARD AND PRAISE GOD (MOODISC 12) Harry Mudie’s classic ’Let me tell you boy’ riddim is amongst the best and this is Jah Walton (Joseph Cotton) over that riddim. With Prince Heron’s deejay cut to ’love is the feeling’ is on the b side.
7) PIPE & THE PIPERS - BACK BITER (TUFF GONG 7)
Wicked tune from the group who went on to be the Wailing Souls who re cut the tune at Channel One. Produced by The Wailers with them as the backing band. Perfect example of early roots. Labels a bit rough, but plays perfectly.
8) JOHNNY OSBOURNE - ROCK AND COME IN (HITBOUND 7) Very nice early 80’s piece from Johnny Osbourne over a Channel One re-cut of the ‘Drifter’ riddim.
